The Western Downs Solar Energy Farm is located on land surrounding the Powerlink Western Downs sub-station near the Kogan Creek Power Station in Hopeland. The solar energy farm will be capable of delivering up to 250MW of renewable energy and consist of up to 900 000 solar PV panels on 500ha and potential battery storage of up to 50MW.

Project Details

The project would have a generation capacity of up to about one-third that of the adjacent Kogan Creek Power Station.

The land is not currently used for any purpose but was formerly low intensity grazing. The energy generated will be injected into the national electricity grid at the existing Western Downs Sub-station, which currently connects into the national electricity grid.

Yellow Solar is a Brisbane based solar energy company and is the majority owner of the proposed site. Tilt Renewables Limited is a New Zealand and Australian publicly listed owner, operator and developer of a number of established wind farms with an extensive wind and solar developments pipeline. Tilt Renewables has been a significant participant in the Australian renewable energy market for more than 15 years.

Together, Yellow Solar and Tilt Renewables plan on developing the proposed solar farm, whilst Tilt Renewables is anticipated to be the long term owner and operator of the project.

Project overview

We anticipate submitting a planning application for the project with the Western Downs Regional Council by July 2017 and will undertake community and stakeholder consultation to provide further information and welcome any feedback prior to lodgement. As part of this process we will offer to meet face to face with immediate neighbours and interested parties.

Tilt Renewables values the strong relationships we’ve shared with landowners and local community groups on all our projects and we would like to build on these relationships for the proposed Western Downs Solar Energy Farm as well.

Tilt Renewables have implemented a community benefit fund at most of our operating projects and we will be looking at establishing a similar scheme for this projects once operational. We will engage with local community closer to construction on an appropriate format and representative management committee for such a community fund.
